I gotta go with the classic "Ruins-in-a-dark-wood" for this one. I mean, its timeless really. Its a picturesque setting, it can house both giant spiders and undead monstrosities, and the ruins always have cool names like "The Dungeons of Thraxgar" or "The Tower of Ulthuun." And at the bottom there's almost always some sort of Vampire. Like I said, classic.
While exploring the "Venom Woods" we found one set of dungeon ruins called "The Ruins of Kroclakah." Inside I believe we fought a rust monster, gargoyles, ettercaps, a gelatinous cube, a mimic, giant preying mantises, ran into an entire room of brown mold, and at the bottom fought a Death Kiss Beholder, which is like a beholder except its eyestalks are replaced with blood-draining hooked tentacles for extra grossness. Yeah, you really can't go wrong with the classic Forest Ruins for the sheer variety of beasties you can fit in there.
Heeeeey, what's with all the swipes? It's the Neverwinter Wood, not Ettercapface Woods.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you remember the death kiss. He was one of my main schemers in the dreaded, unnamed, terrible darkness to descend on the North! Something about "their souls will be tasty!".
I had just watched Army of Darkness or something.
The one thing that stood out in my mind was when Quinn saw a rust monster, he ran away from it, and locked himself in a room. Stripped off all his metal, and apparently his shirt too, for some reason. Then got an old stone spear, and his gym shorts, and went out and killed it.
Players are more scared of Rust Monsters than Owlbears.
The shirt was for the ladies' benefit.
ReplyDeleteAnd heck yes Players are more scared of Rust Monsters than Owlbears! Rust Monsters destroy all your hard-earned treasure and gold, while Owlbears just kill your mage. And you can probably get that mage resurrected with all your gold that wasn't rusted because you were fighting an Owlbear.
